If you can't be a pine on the top of the hill,
Be a scrub in the valley - but be
The best little scrub by the side of the rill;
Be a bush if you can't be a tree.
If you can't be a bush be a bit of the grass,
And some highway happier make;
If you can't be a muskie then just be a bass -
But the liveliest bass in the lake!
We can't all be captains, we've got to be crew,
There's something for all of us here,
There's big work to do, and there's lesser to do,
And the task you must do is the near.
If you can't be a highway then just be a trail,
If you can't be the sun be a star;
It isn't by size that you win or you fail -
Be the best of whatever you are.

ReplyDeleteBoth the poem and the illustration remind me of my beloved Winnie the Pooh.
I agree this does remind me of Winnie the Pooh too! I like this poem alot, and adore the red balloon! You've got great detailing in this!

ReplyDeletekayaknya ngak sempet nih aku ngirim ke IF lagi hikss...
Fantastic words of wisdom... and your illustration is very suiting.... the whimsical balloon in your picture isnt sad..(my thoughts at most lost balloons) , so much as searching for meaning. :)
ReplyDeleteIt is a lovely poem, and your rendering is magical. I love your rich compositions, you captured the feel and look of the woods with your lovely linework. Beautiful illustration!
ReplyDeleteeveryone, thanks! :)
ReplyDeletejanice: that's exactly what i had on mind when i drew the balloon..!
What a great sentiment in the poem, and of course, you've done a great job illustrating it!
ReplyDeleteI would much rather be a trail than a highway BTW, but I would really like to be that red balloon!!
I was quite convinced I left a comment, but it might not have worked. This picture reminded my of a scene from Milne's winnie the pooh. when he tries to get some honey and disguises himself as a raincloud. Love the freedom the balloon shows and the landscape is almost me inviting to come ina nd have a good run.. maybe follow the ballon to some new place! Lovely drawing and beautifull poem!
ReplyDeletenooy, thanks. yes, i made a mistake earlier of posting two identical 'poem' post to IF--i deleted one of them, and unfortunately you're commented on that post.. sorry morry. thanks, you're great! :)
ReplyDeleteSo nice! Both poem and image!
